Fisherman Rowin barely catches enough to make ends meet. But when he meets a mysterious man at his regular fishing spot, his life seems to change completely. As a young fisherman in Curaçao, Rowin struggles to stay afloat. Until one day, he has a remarkable encounter with a secretive figure. Rowin slowly realises that he catches more fish when this man is present at the fishing spot. As the two get to know each other better, Rowin dares to open up about his past and learns to embrace his future. With this film, Kevin Osepa sheds new light on themes such as post colonialism and Afro Caribbean identity.

Kevin Osepa (1994) works as a visual artist using film and photography. He was born and raised in Curaçao and graduated from the Utrecht School of the Arts in 2017. He currently lives and works in Amsterdam. Identity is central to his work, both individual and collective. The stories he tells often start from a very personal perspective, while at the same time highlighting the shared Afro Caribbean identity in a post colonial world.

By using various experimental techniques, Osepa constructs visual stories around themes such as sexuality, masculinity, decolonisation and family. His film La Última Ascensión (2022) won a Golden Calf at the Netherlands Film Festival. In the same year, his work Riku (2018) was shown at the Nederlands Fotomuseum. He previously received both the Charlotte Köhler Prize and the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts and was recently nominated for the Prix de Rome Visual Arts 2025.

The Nederlands Fotomuseum is proud to present this acclaimed film on the side facade of Santos warehouse, in collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, which acquired the film in 2022, offers visitors and passers by, together with the soon to reopen Nederlands Fotomuseum, the opportunity to experience Osepa’s remarkable story, in which the incredible becomes reality.

The presentation La Última Ascensión is made possible in part by Stichting Droom en Daad, Gemeente Rotterdam, The View of Rotterdam and Smarthouse Films.
