When do you call an image a portrait? How far can you stretch the boundaries of portrait photography?

During this two-hour workshop, you explore the different forms a portrait can take together with photographer Eva Roefs. Roefs is one of the photographers from Quickscan 3: Photography Now. In her series Horizontaal, she plays with existing image traditions and our expectations of photography.

Together you look at and discuss different forms of portrait photography. You dive into the library of the Nederlands Fotomuseum for inspiration and then get to work on your own photography assignment. By looking, photographing and exchanging perspectives, you discover just how broad the concept of a portrait can be.

The workshop is suitable for anyone aged 16 and over who is interested in photography and wants to delve deeper into portrait photography.

During this three-hour workshop with photographer Leonie Gossens of Club Caffenol, you will create photograms using light-sensitive photographic paper, negatives and found materials. You will then develop the prints yourself using Caffenol-C, an alternative photographic developer with coffee as a key ingredient.

The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as participants with some experience in analogue photography who want to explore the process further. You will work through the different stages in the darkroom yourself, from creating an image to developing the print.

The Hein Wertheimer darkroom is only open to the public during workshops.

On Thursday 29 October, the museum will stay open until 9 PM. Drop by in the evening, after work, studying or your daytime activities, and take your time exploring the exhibitions.

During the evening opening, you can join Coco Olakunle’s Photography Book Club in the entrance hall or take part in a tour of Quickscan 3. You can also explore the exhibitions at your own pace throughout the evening.

During the evening opening on 29 October, makers Bebe Blanco Agterberg, Jan Dirk van der Burg, Peter Pflüger, Helmut Smits, Prins de Vos and curator Ruben Lundgren will discuss their work in Quickscan 3.

Explore Quickscan 3: Photography Now, together with the people who created the exhibition. Curator Ruben Lundgren and participating artists will guide you through the exhibition and their own work, explaining how it relates to current developments in photography.

On 29 October, Coco Olakunle brings the Photography Book Club to the Nederlands Fotomuseum. Olakunle is a photographer and one of the participating artists in Quickscan 3. The Book Club takes place on the ground floor, which is also accessible without a museum ticket. Everyone is welcome to explore photobooks together and join the conversation.

Olakunle founded the Photography Book Club in 2022 as an informal gathering in her Amsterdam studio. The collection focuses on photobooks by African photographers and artists from the diaspora and has since expanded to include titles from around the world.

How do you shoot street photography that goes beyond a chance moment?

During this workshop with photographer Esther Hovers, you explore how light, composition, colour and reflections determine what you capture on the street. You will explore the work of various photographers and discover how they capture their surroundings.

Then, it’s your turn. You choose an existing street photo as a starting point and make your own version of it. By looking closely, recreating and experimenting, you discover which choices a photographer makes and how you can then put your own spin on them.

The workshop is aimed at young people and young adults from the age of 16 with an interest in photography and art. Whether you’re consciously picking up photography for the first time or already have more experience: everyone is welcome.

Hovers is one of the participating artists in Quickscan 3: Photography Now.

On Thursday 19 November, the Nederlands Fotomuseum opens Violette Cornelius Rediscovered. Join us for the opening evening and be among the first to see more than 200 works by photographer and resistance fighter Violette Cornelius (1919–1998).

Much of her work remained hidden for decades and only came to light after suitcases filled with negatives, slides, prints and documents were discovered. The exhibition brings together her photography, personal documents and archival material, shedding new light on her life and work.

The evening begins with a short welcome by Head of Collections Martijn van den Broek. Curator Loes van Harrevelt will then introduce the story behind Cornelius and her rediscovered work. From 7.15 PM, the exhibition will be open and a DJ will play until 10 PM.

Good Food: A Journey Through the World of Food and Resilience explores how photography tells stories about food, agriculture and resilience. In Quickscan 3: Photography Now, twenty photographers and visual artists working in the Netherlands explore what photography can be today.
