Spectators at a Feyenoord-Ajax Soccer Game, De Kuip, Rotterdam, 1969
Vincent Mentzel
Good timing
Vincent Mentzel was a photographer with an idiosyncratic eye and a keen sense of when to capture a human moment. It can be seen here when, instead of shooting the game, he points his camera at the crowd during what appears to be a key moment. This was characteristic of Mentzel. During his career as a photographer, he took pictures for international news stories, but he also became known for capturing powerful political figures in natural, off-guard moments. In this photograph, Mentzel captures not only an instant in time, but also an era. An era when men – and only men, judging by the picture – went to a football match wearing a shirt and tie.
