As for photo books, The Netherlands has a unique tradition in which graphic designers and photographers work closely together. This led to a sustained international appreciation of the Dutch photo book.

In the mid-1950s, Ed van der Elsken created his now classic photo novel Love on the Left Bank in close collaboration with designer Jurriaan Schrofer. High profile contemporary examples include: Viviane Sassen and SYB, Jacqueline Hassink and Irma Boom, Rob Hornstra and LMNOP, Bertien van Manen and Hans Gremmen.

Traditional Dutch photography has a great aversion to art and photo theory. The same applies to Dutch photographers and visual artists. Broad appreciation only comes after demonstrable success abroad.
